More Postmodern Sex

Yes, folks, we’re entering a new era. I wasn’t surprised to see notice of a new social networking site geared toward gay men . I’m sure there are plenty already.

What struck me, however, was this selling point.

Users can tag themselves in any way they choose—a nice change from the more heteronormative websites such as Facebook or MySpace which offer only the most bipolar of gender and sexual preference identifiers.

Yes, male and female, they’re limiting words. Kinda like reality in that regard. And Richard Dawkins thinks its religious believers who live in a world of magical thinking.

From time immemorial, human beings have been mad about sex—and we’ve been driven mad by sex. Today things just seem to get madder and madder.

Why? Because postmodern culture now entertains a crazy vision. Instead of disciplining our desires to bring them in accord with reality, we mash up, surgically change, and engage in verbal games to manipulate reality so it can serve our desires.

That reversal—what I call the Empire of Desire—defines the postmodern age. Desire rules, to be served by reality and truth.
