The Committee on Doctrine of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is hosting a conference in September, ” The Intellectual Tasks of the New Evangelization .” The purpose? “The Committee hopes this conference will provide an occasion to build relationships between bishops and the next generation of theologians.”
A good idea indeed. Today, the academic Establishment in Catholic theology tends to set itself up as an authority over and against the teaching role of the bishops. It’s a counterproductive outlook that needs to change.
