The Oikoumene and the Land

Those who keep (tereo) Jesus’ words will be kept (tereo) from the hour that is coming (Revelation 3:10).

It’s a global hour, coming on the whole oikoumene. And it will test the ones who dwell on the earth (ge). Is that simply saying the same thing twice: The hour of testing will come on the whole world, and it will test the ones who dwell on the whole world? Or is there a distinction of environments?

I think the latter. Otherwise the warning is inexplicably repetitive; of course an hour of testing that comes on the whole world will test the whole world. Duh.

But if we distinguish, then we have this pattern:The oikoumene is the imperial Mediterranean world; the crisis that is coming soon (tachu) will grip the entire Roman world. But the this crisis will test those who dwell on the land, that is, in the land of Israel.

These aren’t the only two environments mentioned here. Jesus goes on to speak of the “temple of My God” (v. 12). So we have the three environments of the old world: world, land, temple. World and land are in crisis, but there is safety and stability within the temple of God, with its sturdy pillars.
