That by which we rise

That by which we rise
is that by which we fall. 
This comes as no surprise at all.
But paradox the rule,
that by which we fall
is also that by which we rise.
This may seem cruel—
this may seem mean and small
of God—but there it lies:
salvation’s protocol.
