Gayle Trotter on Rick Santorum

Evangel writer Gayle Trotter has a nice post on Rick Santorum’s faith over at the Washington Post  site.  Trotter mentions Ann Coulter’s claim that Santorum is more Catholic than he is conservative, citing his support for big-government programs like No Child Left Behind and the Medicare prescription drug benefit. What Coulter fails to mention is that his position on a host of issues—-from illegal immigration to the Iraq War—-is far out of step with the preferred policies of most Vatican officials and American bishops. This doesn’t necessarily make Santorum anything less than Catholic or conservative. It’s quite possible to be both (within certain limits), just as it is possible to be a pro-life Catholic liberal.
