First Annual Nevin Lectures

Trinity House Institute is delighted to announce our first annual series of Nevin Lectures. Timothy George, Dean and Professor of Church History at Beeson Divinity School, will deliver four lectures on Sacramental Theology from a Baptist Perspective on February 7-8, 2014 at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, Alabama.

The lecture topics are: Recovering the Baptismal Theology of the Early Church; Being Baptized More and More: Luther on Baptism and the Christian Life; How Calvin was Wrong about Baptism and Right about the Lords Supper; and John Williamson Nevin and Philip Schaff: A Baptist Appreciation. Peter Leithart, President of Trinity House, will offer a response to Dr. George.

The Nevin Lectures are named for John Williamson Nevin (1803-1886), who with Philip Schaff developed what has come to be known as the Mercersburg Theology. Nevin and Schaff were sharply critical of the sectarian and sensationalist evangelicalism of their day and strove toward a churchly, catholic, and sacramental future for Reformed Protestantism.

Inspired by Nevins example, the Nevin Lectures are ecumenical events, designed to facilitate mutual education and fraternal conversation among Christians about the issues that divide us. Each year, Trinity House will invite a theologian, pastor, or leader from outside our Reformed tradition to speak on a topic about which we have serious theological disagreements.

Dr. Georges first lecture begins at 7 PM on Friday, February 7, and the remainder of the lectures will begin at 9 AM on Saturday, February 8. Trinity Presbyterian Church is located at 3251 Greendale Road, Birmingham, Alabama.

Nevin Lectures are free and open to the public.
