John 14:12; 16:7: Truly, truly I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father . . . . It is good that I go away.
Despite the massive changes coming in the next six months, Trinity Reformed Church will remain essentially what it has always been. You will be sons of one Father. Jesus will be the same yesterday, today, forever. This will still be His church, animated and united by His Spirit.
The changes are not nothing, but they aren’t a reason for regret or fear. God created a world of change, and said, “Very good.” Jesus says, “It is good that I go away.” Once Jesus leaves, the disciples do greater things than when He was present.
Jesus’ departure is unique. The disciples’ greater works come from the Spirit, whom Jesus sends, filled with resurrection power. Yet Jesus’ words apply in little to all departures and changes.
This table is a sign of permanence because it is a weekly reassurance that Jesus is with you to the end of the age. It’s also an encouragement in the midst of change because it reminds us that Jesus left so that by His Spirit we can do greater works.
