“Who’s the Greatest Mom of All? Earth Mama!”

“Who’s the greatest mom of all?” Earth Mama!”

Students in public schools are all too often forced to sing similar paeans to the environment. But at a Catholic school, shouldn’t kids be taught that Earth Mama comes in (at least) second to Mary, Mother of God?

Unfortunately, that’s one of the least offensive parts about this video clip of St. Mary’s Resurrection Elementary School in New Jersey.

According to the reporter, the school makes “respecting and caring for the earth a part of all they do.” It’s a noble sentiment taken too far far when kids start pledging their allegiance “to the earth and all Her sacred hearts.” As one older student claims, “We’re learning how God and the environment are one because God created us and he created the Earth.”

While I’m sure the teachers have the best of intentions, their approach is likely confusing the children about Christianity’s doctrine of creation. Too many American kids already subscribe to the alternative faith of Moralistic Therapeutic Deism —do we really want to convert them to Moralistic Therapeutic Pantheism?

Teaching children to respect and care for God’s creation shouldn’t requre a curriculum spanning agenda of enviromentalism. All that is needed is for kid’s to acknowledge, as the last girl in the clip says, that: “God created the Earth and it’s our responsibility to take care of it.”
