Following First Things in exposing the dangers of pornography , the lefty magazine Mother Jones has just published a story by one of their staff reporters (implying that they think it an important topic) Have the Feds Gone Soft on Porn?
“The days of women wearing a coy smile and not much else are long gone,” Gail Dines explained to the congressional crowd. A women’s studies professor at Boston’s Wheelock College and author of the upcoming book Pornland: How Porn Has Hijacked our Sexuality , Dines has perused [a vile porn site], and she described some of its content to the crowd . . . . “Porn is an industrial product,” said Dines, who has studied the industry for 20-plus years. “I cannot believe how brutal it has become so quickly.” [The vile porn site] and their ilk, she added, are now the main source of sex education for boys.
The author, of course, makes sure to distinguish herself from “evangelical prudes,” which is a bit of a bore. One wishes that when leftists discover what had been conservative causes, they might consider that the conservatives pursued them for the same reasons they’ve now discovered them. Maybe these “evangelical prudes” (she mentions Phyllis Schlafly in particular) saw what the industry did to men and women and what it would do to society if it was not checked. And saw it when a lot of enlightened people saw pornography as harmless and liberating. Maybe those “prudes” were prophetic.
And she calls Hugh Hefner “lovable.” No. Avuncular, maybe, but not lovable, unless one finds panderers lovable.
But beyond that, it is a good article that is good to see appearing where it appears.
One warning : The reader who sent the link warns that it begins with “a gross picture.” The idea that some males find that kind of thing erotic just baffles me. The poor woman looks silly. That some men apparently like this kind of thing suggests how corrupting pornography is.
Dear Reader,
Can I be direct with you?
War abroad. Socialists on the rise. AI upending human life. Endless uproar online. The modern attention economy doesn’t want readers — it wants users enslaved to the tyranny of the present.
First Things is the antidote: literary excellence, timeless truths, and a fixed point of reference in a culture that has lost its bearings.
But we can’t do it without readers like you.
Our goal: Raise $150,000 by November 1 to sustain First Things in the year ahead.
Your gift anchors readers in the permanent things.
