Lest We Forget

The fall 2008 campaign of 40 Days for Life officially concluded this past Sunday, but not before several hundred lives were saved :

“Even after praying and fasting for 40 days—and being involved in vigils that in many cities went round the clock, seven days a week—many of the people who are participating in this campaign simply don’t want to see it end,” said David Bereit, national campaign director of 40 Days for Life. “Tens of thousands of people have prayed in front of abortion facilities, many for the first time. They see the impact of that peaceful presence, and they yearn to keep going.” . . .

“We know of at least 441 lives that were saved from abortion as a result of the 40 Days for Life effort thus far,” said Bereit. “But those are not the only lives that have been changed. We hear every day about people seeking help who have been dealing with abortion experiences—some of them have been hurting for more than thirty years. There are people in the abortion industry who have been touched by this effort. They, too, are witnessing the power of prayer at work first hand. The secular world would say 40 Days for Life is futile, perhaps even foolish. But we’ve seen the evidence that God has blessed this effort, and we can’t wait to see where He will lead us next.”

Dear Reader,

Can I be direct with you?

War abroad. Socialists on the rise. AI upending human life. Endless uproar online. The modern attention economy doesn’t want readers — it wants users enslaved to the tyranny of the present.

First Things is the antidote: literary excellence, timeless truths, and a fixed point of reference in a culture that has lost its bearings.

But we can’t do it without readers like you.

Our goal: Raise $150,000 by November 1 to sustain First Things in the year ahead.

Your gift anchors readers in the permanent things.
