A week or so ago I mentioned some summer programs that the Witherspoon Institute is putting on . Here’s another summer program that might interest young readers. I was a Publius Fellow this past summer and highly recommend it.
The Claremont Institute is now accepting applications for the 2008 Publius Fellowship program. Publius Fellowships will be awarded to highly qualified college seniors, recent college graduates, and graduate students pursuing careers in politics, scholarship, or journalism. Application materials for the 2008 program are available to download here. The application deadline for the 2008 program is March 14.
Every summer since 1979, the Claremont Institute has brought together a select group of young conservatives for the Publius Fellowship. These Publius Fellows meet with the Institute’s Senior Fellows and other distinguished visiting scholars to study American politics and political thought. In intensive daily seminars and relaxed evening symposia, fellows discuss great American readings—from the Founding, to the Civil War, the Progressive Era, and the enduring disputes between liberalism and conservatism. Fellows also work with the editors and writers of the Claremont Review of Books to hone the craft of political writing. A list of those selected as 2007 Publius fellows is available here .
The Publius Fellowship takes its name from The Federalist Papers. Written in 1787-88 as a series of newspaper essays, The Federalist Papers remain the preeminent work of American political journalism. Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay published the papers under the pen name “Publius,” a founder of the Roman republic. The Federalist addressed the crucial political question of their day, the ratification of the Constitution and the founding of the American republic. Publius drew on both political philosophy and the experience of statesmen to commend the Constitution as the basis of free and just government.
“The principles of the American Founding may be self-evident, but they are not always obvious and require an articulate defense in every generation.”
—Brian Brenberg, 2007 Publius Fellow

Dear Reader,
Can I be direct with you?
War abroad. Socialists on the rise. AI upending human life. Endless uproar online. The modern attention economy doesn’t want readers — it wants users enslaved to the tyranny of the present.
First Things is the antidote: literary excellence, timeless truths, and a fixed point of reference in a culture that has lost its bearings.
But we can’t do it without readers like you.
Our goal: Raise $150,000 by November 1 to sustain First Things in the year ahead.
Your gift anchors readers in the permanent things.
