Compared to the tempestuous beginning of upsets, blowouts, and close-calls, Round 2 proved to be quite tame. The powerhouse books trampled their competition without much effort. (The lone surprise was that the low-brow favorite Hunt for Red October trouncing the literary champ, Herzog .)
Each of the final sixteen, however, will have a difficult time moving on to the next round. The competition is fierce, with match-ups like The Brothers Karamazov versus Moby-Dick and The Lord of the Rings facing off against Pride and Prejudice .
Will the favored novels make it to the final eight or will one of the underdogs — Charlotte’s Web, Wise Blood —slip into the final brackets?
