The Revival of Memorial Day

For today’s “On the Square,” a reflection on the revival of Memorial Day he thinks we are experiencing by Anthony Esolen, The Soldier’s Rough Charity . We are witnessing, he writes,

a certain revival of Memorial Day, along with a revival of something better than the disdain or the grudging respect with which the veterans of the Vietnam War were greeted. That something is a real gratitude for our soldiers, even affection.

His last “On the Square” article was Desires Run Not Before Honor , an examination of Shakespeare’s belief that “chastity is as near to an absolute value as it is possible for a virtue to be.”
