Saecula Saeculorum

For centuries the human spirit strove
To rise above the beast,
Gazed at the stars, and aimed at truth and love
With Socrates and Christ.

Till weary generations, faltering, found
That this was not a go;
Gazing at dirt, despondent, they sank down
With Nietzsche, Freud, Foucault.
