Western South Dakota and Eastern Wyoming Rock!

Last week, Secondhand Smokette and I had a very nice vacation in Eastern Wyoming and Western South Dakota.  Quite wonderful.  Not as spectacular as our usual haunt in the Tetons, but far less crowded.  Here are a few photos I took.

Total kitsch in Deadwood, SD, where Wild Bill Hickok was murdered while playing poker. He was holding two pairs of aces and eights when he was shot, which thereafter came to be known as the “Dead Man’s Hand:”

We took a good hike around the base of Devil’s Tower. No “close encounters” of the third or any kind to report:

The lobby of the wonderful old Occidental Hotel in Buffalo, WY. The city’s elevation is higher than its population. The name of the town is not a derivative of the American bison, but from the city in New York.

John Adams would be so angry that Jefferson made Mt. Rushmore and he didn’t:

We stayed with great friends in Hot Springs, SD, where a really well curated dig of ancient mammoth fossils made for an interesting time:
