Thursday Thoughts

Studies show that Pete might have been right about the debate, insofar as Romney is now ahead a litte in Florida. The trend in Mitt’s direction is actually quite striking.

This may prove that defense doesn’t win primaries. Newt decided to lay back last time and let Mitt attack. I’m still not sure that many blows really landed. The truth may be that flat debates help the flat guy. It may have been easy to predict Newt would win Florida, but it seems to have been wrong. The “effectual truth” of this week is both candidates look worse, but maybe Newt a little more worse.

The content of Mitch Daniels’ speech was excellent, the delivery could use some work. But I agree: Run, Mitch, run. Newt’s stark contrasts are fake and demagogic and only make sense to the Republicans’ angry base, and Romney seems emptier and richer than ever. One bad thing about a Romney victory in FL (which would be more a good thing or not) is that the perception of a crisis by “the estabishment” that might generate another candidate woud be gone for the moment, at least.

Santorum seems to have flat-lined, although someone might say this should be his time to become the “regular guy” alternative to Romney.

Carl’s insight that the challenge of Disco made brought back dance-able Rock is actually fun and fascinating. I have admit MY SHERONA etc. don’t do anything for me, and the quality of dancing found in, for example, those Seattle movies is unimpressive or lacking in both rhythm and class. The B-52s are a special case.
