The Sedate South Dakota

Reno reflects on why South Dakota, and by extension much of “fly over country,” developed into such the buccolic Midwest of the cultural stereotype, when the historical and sociological factors of its late 19th development pointed to to the social discord we now associate with east and west coast cities. In this history, he finds hope even for those cities.
