Reno’s Fears, Bottum’s Declarations

Tomorrow, in “On the Square,” senior editor R.R. Reno will reflect on what Walt Whitman’s self-exaltation taught him about what he fears in our radically democratic culture.

In the meantime, vigorous discussions continue of Joseph Bottum’s They Did It from Friday and today’s Riding Away . The discussion of the first seems to have focused on the propriety of the death penalty and the implications of the writer’s view of modern government, that of the second on the real effects of college upon children.
