Religion and Politics Debate

On Saturday, November 10, at Gotham Hall in New York City, The Economist magazine will sponsor a debate that should be of great interest to our readers.

The proposition: “Religion and politics should always be kept separate.”

The participants:

Barry Lynn and Irshad Manji (for the proposition)

and

Fr. Richard John Neuhaus and Walter Russell Mead (against the proposition)

Barry Lynn is executive director of Americans United for the Separation of Church and State . Irshad Manji is the author of The Trouble with Islam: A Muslim’s Call for the Reform in Her Faith . Walter Russell Mead is author of God and Gold: Britain, America, and the Making of the Modern World .

If at this point you don’t know who Richard John Neuhaus is, perhaps you should just stay home. (I hear Nick at Nite will be enjoying a Sponge Bob SquarePants marathon.)
