On the Square Today

Today On the Square, Matthew Hennessey writes on “Down Syndrome and the Purpose of Prenatal Testing” :

I view the drive to eradicate Down syndrome through abortion as a threat to my daughter’s health and well-being. As the prevalence of Down syndrome declines, so too will research funding and social support. No one wants their child to be an endangered species. No one wants their kid to be the last of the Mohicans.

And Seth Chalmer argues that universalism and particularism are not in conflict in “A Particularly Universal Love” :

Now, it is true that some Jews emphasize either particularism or universalism to the detriment of the other. Some Jews really don’t care enough about people beyond the Jewish world, and to them we ought to speak of Judaism’s many teachings that insist they open their hearts to all people.
