The 38th Annual Erasmus Lecture: In Praise of Translation
Union League Club, 38 E 37th Street, New York, NY 10016

First Things invites you to join us for the thirty-eighth annual Erasmus Lecture, “In Praise of Translation,” to be given by Bishop Erik Varden. The ability to understand, interpret, and render others’ speech is a foundation of culture, a condition for politics. Theology, too, is in essence translation, an attempt to frame in human terms an eternal Word. Bishop Varden, cautioning against monoglot assumptions, presents translation as a paradigm for engaging intelligently with otherness.
If you would like to attend the annual Erasmus poetry reading with Ben Myers on Sunday, November 2 at 5 p.m., please register here.
About the Lecturer
Bishop Erik Varden was born in Norway in 1974, into a non-practicing Lutheran family, and entered the Catholic Church in June 1993. After ten years at the University of Cambridge he joined Mount Saint Bernard Abbey in England as a Trappist monk. He was ordained a priest in 2011, and named bishop of Trondheim in 2019 by Pope Francis. He is the author of numerous essays and books including The Shattering of Loneliness and Chastity: Reconciliation of the Senses.
