John 4: Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give shall become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.
Jesus is never far from water. He turns water to wine, heals a paralytic at a pool, walks on the sea, tells a blind man to wash his eyes. When He dies, water and blood flow from His side, because Jesus comes not by water only but by water and blood.
Here Jesus meets a Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well and offers her living water. Jesus’ water is better than Jacob’s because His is inexhaustible. Once you drink the water of Jesus, you become a source of water. You are refreshed from a well within.
Jesus is talking about the Spirit. “He who believes in Me, from his innermost being shall flow rivers of living water” – this, John tells us, Jesus spoke of the Spirit.
As we drink the living water of the Spirit, glorified to wine, we are refreshed and become sources of refreshment; we rejoice and our joy overflows. We are temples streaming with water, a new Eden with rivers flowing to renew the earth, a mountain dripping with sweet wine.
