Eucharistic meditation

Matthew 7: What man is there among you who, when his son asks for a loaf, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!

Every week we learn again that our Father is a good Father. He does not give us a stone when we seek bread; he does not fill our cups with venom but with the wine of gladness.

As this table reminds us of the character of our Father, it also assures us that we are His children. If you are here, receiving the bread from the heavenly Father, you are one of His sons.

We doubt this good news. Surrounded by His bounty, we wonder if our Father really loves us. He keeps giving us bread, but we’re pretty sure there’s a stone cooked into it. We half expect to break a tooth.

Such doubts insult your Father, who is good. There is no doubt: You are at the family table, and that means you’re a member of the family. God is not playing a hidden game; you’re here because He loves you and sent His Son for you.

Eat and drink like one of his sons. Then honor your Father by trusting, loving, serving Him – like one of His sons. Since that’s what you are.
