In the new CBS poll, Cain has pulled even with Romney. Not only that, the same link will show you four different state polls (including Nebraska) that show Cain in the lead. In Georgia, it’s a landslide for Herman right now, who is hugely popular among all the South’s Republicans. I completely agree with John P. below that the baggage of being REALLY Texan has probably done Perry in, even as I agree that it’s not with complete justice.
If Cain can rise to the occasion (as he has at other points in his fascinating life), can the Republicans benefit from a real debate over the two quite different policy orientations of the two and only two top-tier candidates? Jim Ceaser, Robby George etc., it seems to me, have to stop hoping that only a (Jeb) Bush can save us now. We gotta play with the candidates we got.
If it’s Cain vs. Romney one-on-one, only a fool would bet the farm on the outcome.
