Somehow escaping
The sharp eye
Of angels, shepherds,
And magi,
Thieves snatch the infant
From the crèche
To spirit God off
In the flesh.

To massacre
The innocent

To take flight.
To empty Christmas

Would seem the purpose
Of the heist—
Unless the abject
And forlorn
Hijack the babe
To feel newborn

They gain a love

Unlike the soulless

The Nazarene
Restores the lost

With holiness.
