A religious goods company in Rhode Island finds the suffering economy isn’t causing a loss in its sales but a spike.
“When times are tough, more people seem to go to church,” said Brian Cavanagh, the chief executive officer of Cavanagh Co. He said sales of the company’s altar breads are up as much as 5 percent this year, a possible indicator of the national mood. Sales spiked 10 percent after the Sept. 11 attacks.
Which reminds me of something I was just thinking about the other day. If the tough economic situation draws more Americans to religion, could we hope for a resurgence of concern for ethical issues and social values by 2012?
