1 Kings 10:4-5
The glory and prosperity of Solomon?s kingdom is particularly on display at his table. Back in 1 Kings 4, the abundance of the table of Solomon is a sign of the prosperity of the whole kingdom. The joy of his table represents the joy of his whole kingdom. And here, as we have seen, the Queen of Sheba is particularly struck by the order and beauty of Solomon?s banquet.
This scene is a perfect type of the new covenant. There is a Gentile queen, bringing her gifts and tribute to a king of Israel. There is the king in beauty surrounded by numerous attendants. There is the king enthroned in Sabbath rest, having subdued all his enemies. And at the center of the scene is the banquet table where Solomon and Sheba, the king of Israel and the Queen of the Gentiles, sit to eat and drink.
The table of Solomon is a type of the table of the greater Solomon. We are the bride, the Gentile Queen who has comes bearing our treasures as tribute to Jesus. We are the Gentile Queen who is awed by the majesty and power of the King of the Jews. We are the Gentile Queen invited to sit at Solomon?s table.
It is enough to take your breath away.
