On August 11, 2017 at the First Things intellectual retreat New York City, Professor Joshua Mitchell of Georgetown University delivered a lecture on the intellectual history and impending crisis of American democracy. Drawing on the insights of Plato and Alexis de Tocqueville, Prof. Mitchell argues that neither political party is prepared to answer the greatest threats against democracy in our time.
Joshua Mitchell teaches political theory in the Department of Government at Georgetown University. His research interest lies in the relationship between political thought and theology in the West. He has published articles in The Review of Politics, The Journal of Politics, The Journal of Religion, APSR, and Political Theory.
