Maryann Corbett earned a PhD in English with a specialization in medieval literature and linguistics and expected to teach Beowulf, Chaucer, and the history of the English language. Instead, she spent almost thirty-five years working for the Minnesota Legislature as an in-house legal-writing teacher, editor, and indexer. This proximity to the legislative sausage grinder made it necessary for her to turn to poetry as a calming influence
Her poems, essays, and translations have appeared in Southwest Review, Rattle, Atlanta Review, The Evansville Review, Measure, Literary Imagination, The Dark Horse, Linebreak, Poetry Daily, Verse Daily, The Poetry Foundation, The Writer's Almanac. She has published several collections of poetry, including Credo for the Checkout Line in Winter, Mid Evil, Street View, Dissonance, and Breath Control.
