In his piece for today’s On the Square , Aaron Taylor argues that Francis and Benedict’s comments on gay priests are part of a robust commitment to defending the dignity of all people. Gay Catholic men are not called to be priests merely because they are called to be celibate, after all:
Above all, a healthy spiritual approach to homosexuality ought to make clear that gay Christians have a legitimate place within the Body of Christ without having to pretend that they dont exist by being pressured either into marriage or into becoming closeted priests.
