As far as I know, the only other BLOG that deals with all our POSTMODERN and CONSERVATIVE themes is SIGNPOSTINGS, which mainly features posts by our threader Colin Brown.
Percy, Tocqueville, Southern literature, Strauss, moderate anti-placism—it’s all displayed thoughtfully and provocatively.
Here Colin describes what he might do on his summer vacation—compare Tocqueville and Robert Penn Warren on the democratic decay of the American idea of “the responsible self.” We conservatives are all about describing declines and falls, but we don’t forget the truth and nobility of our founding idea. If it’s been unsustainable in our country (and the verdict, as usual, is still out), it’s because we haven’t understood it relationally enough.
You have a decision to make: double or nothing.
For this week only, a generous supporter has offered to fully match all new and increased donations to First Things up to $60,000.
In other words, your gift of $50 unlocks $100 for First Things, your gift of $100 unlocks $200, and so on, up to a total of $120,000. But if you don’t give, nothing.
So what will it be, dear reader: double, or nothing?
Make your year-end gift go twice as far for First Things by giving now.
