I remember watching Obama in 2008. He was asked about an issue on which he had changed his mind. Obama answered that he had opposed the 1996 welfare reform law (with its time limits and work requirements) because he though it would hurt families, but the actual experience of dropping caseloads and families transitioning from dependency to work proved him wrong. Now the Obama administration has gutted the work requirements in welfare reform. Basically, if state welfare agencies want to substitute some non-work activity (possibly endless retraining programs) for work requirements, they can get a waiver from the department of Health and Human Services. If you thought Obama had moved to the center on the issue, you’ve been had. Expect a “waiver” of the time limit requirements if Obama gets reelected.
