I’ll rely on Pete to tell me about it.
But Gene Callahan reminds us in the thread that a lot of the dissatisfaction with Obama is from the LEFT. Lots of Democrats have used that he’s governing like a moderate Republican line with me. Meanwhile lots of conservatives still say—with some legislative evidence—that he is or would like to be a dangerous Progressive. In being realistic, we have to remember that the LEFTIST dissatisfaction with the president will disappear if his reelection is in serious doubt.
I certainly agree with Pete that Rick Perry is no Ronald Reagan. Obviously Perry’s sensibilities have been framed by what it takes to run to the right in Texas. Reagan sounded reasonable and genial, and not like he came from any particular part of the country. He wasn’t enthusiastic about the death penalty or guns or a dogmatic enviro-skeptic and had no opinion about worth mentioning about evolution or creationism. He wanted to scuttle the Great Society but shore up the New Deal. He didn’t even belong to any particular denomination—although nobody doubted he was some kind of believing Christian. He also had a clear respect for books and learning and the liberal part of higher education. He had as little baggage as a man with his firm principles could have.
