From Wednesday’s “Metro” section of the Washington Post in an article titled, ” Ministers Lead Protest of D.C. Legislation “:
This month, the D.C. Council gave preliminary approval to legislation that would recognize same-sex marriages performed elsewhere in the country, and council member David A. Catania (I-At Large), who is gay, has said he will introduce a bill this year to allow same-sex marriages in the District. Any District legislation has to survive a congressional review.
It is probably worth noting that this wasn’t exactly a “diverse” gathering of ministers. This was a gathering of African-American ministers. According to the Post , “The ministers contend that the city’s elected officials are pushing legislation that most District residents oppose.”
According to the Post , D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty reiterated his support of gay marriage. “Everybody is entitled to the same rights,” he said. The Post also tells us that the council bill to recognize same-sex marriages was sponsored by former Mayor Marion Barry. But he told the rally of ministers that he now opposes the bill, describing his position as “evolving.”
You might want to check out the video of the rally and the interviews conducted by the Post . Bishop Henry Jackson held forth with the radical notion that marriage was between a man and a woman, proclaiming, “I’d rather be biblically courageous than politically correct.” Pastor George C. Gilbert on Holy Trinity United Baptist Church led a crowd in a chant of “Not on Our Watch.”
