New Jersey nurses won a temporary restraining order against being forced to participate in abortion. From the AP story:
A New Jersey hospital says it will temporarily stop requiring nurses to assist in performing abortions if they object on religious grounds. A group of nurses filed suit last week against the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey claiming the hospital required them to undergo training that involved assisting in the procedure. The suit claimed they could be subject to termination if they didn’t comply. Attorneys for the hospital notified a federal judge in Newark on Thursday that UMDNJ won’t require the nurses to participate in the training before a Nov. 18 court hearing. The judge issued a temporary restraining order to that effect. The hospital has said none of its nurses is required to participate in procedures he or she objects to on religious or moral grounds.
Then the hospital should agree to a permanent restraining order and end the litigation.
As medicine increasingly becomes involved with taking human life—e.g., abortion, assisted suicide, embryonic stem cell research, perhaps even organ harvesting from the living—medical conscience will become an increasingly hot topic. Nobody should ever be forced to participate or be complicit in the taking of human life. Go nurses!
