Our subject for this post is hypocrisy, that is, the hypocrisy of one of the most famous hand wringers about global warming. We’ve seen Al Gore with his many houses and private jets. Tom Friedman, with his mansion. And now, director James Cameron joins the kids at the hypocrites table.
Cameron has given a lot of money to defeat Proposition 23 (The California Jobs Initiative) here in CA, that would suspend the state’s new anti global warming law—which the initiative’s proponents claim (correctly in my view) badly hurt California’s fast-sinking economy—until unemployment in the once Golden State is down to 5.5 percent for four consecutive quarters. (It is now at a yawning 12.6 percent.) Can’t have that, Cameron believes. We must be green!
But like oh, so many rich and famous hysterics, with Cameron, it is a case of do as I say, not as I do. He is a blatant carbon spewer! As the below commercial so vividly illustrates.
Of course, I don’t really care. He’s made a mint, let him enjoy the perks. But he should—if he really believes what he says about the supposed dire dangers of global warming. I mean, lead by example. At least give up the helicopter!
You have a decision to make: double or nothing.
For this week only, a generous supporter has offered to fully match all new and increased donations to First Things up to $60,000.
In other words, your gift of $50 unlocks $100 for First Things, your gift of $100 unlocks $200, and so on, up to a total of $120,000. But if you don’t give, nothing.
So what will it be, dear reader: double, or nothing?
Make your year-end gift go twice as far for First Things by giving now.
