September 11, 2001 was my first day of regular college classes. A few days before, my classmates and I had read and discussed C.S. Lewis' great sermon, "Learning in Wartime." There wasn't much question of what was expected of us on 9/11. We heard the news, ate our breakfasts, found a television, then went to class and discussed Plato's Meno and the definitions in Euclid's Elements.

My philosophy tutor was also the Dean. He remarked that the Administration had considered changing the pre-tutorial reading for 2001.
