Thank you for reminding us that self-parody is not a lost art.

JGY -- that just goes to show the folly of pigeonholing and profiling instead of finding out things about people as individuals, I guess. You're highly likely to be extremely wrong. I don't know a single person who fits even half of those; I know very few people who fit any of them other than the first, and loving well-made movies based on literary masterpieces is hardly an evangelical distinctive.

When I encounter people like JGY, I default to my own stereotypes:

Used to be totally immersed in all that is listed in his/her post.

Outgrew said non-sense.

Now sees that our only hope is the government if and only if that government supports gay marriage and abortion.

Rich people suck. They especially suck if they're white. JGY is white and rich.

JGY,
Quite an impressive caricaturization. I'm curious, what is it about science that you think evangelicals dislike?

When someone identifies as an evangelical, I try to fight the tendency to pigeonhole them with following profile:

Favorite films: The Lord of the Ring trilogy

Literary tastes: the Left Behind series, Frank Peretti, anything by Rick Warren

Other cultural interests: Kinkade, Christian rock

Political orientation: Michele Bachmann, Sarah Palin before her; George W. (secretly these days)

Role models: Carrie Prejean, those listed directly above

Dislikes: Science, universities (but Biola is pretty awesome), recycling, other religious traditions, the NY Times (I've never read it), Harry Potter.

Life fantasy: cruise ship and Holy Land combo tour with a C.S. Lewis impersonator who will equip us to combat gay marriage and "secular worldviews" (which, as we all know, claim that truth and morality are relative).

Matt, I believe the point is that conversion as a "dramatic experience" is often referred to in common parlance as a "born again experience." However, that's not exactly what being born again means. One can experience regeneration in a variety of ways, not all of them dramatic or even necessarily very time-specific.

So Jesus said, "You must be born again." He did not say, "You must go through a particular kind of conversion experience." There are many ways in which people experience being born again. Some are barely distinguishable from being born the first time and raised in the faith; some are a gradual process of one day realizing that you simply believe and trust Christ without having any "zap" moment, and so on. For some, it's a definite experience, but not necessarily more dramatic than the day calculus starts making sense to you, etc.

Lindsay seems to be saying that evangelicals are the only ones who are compelled by their faith to "live a certain way" and "bear witness to their faith in word and deed." How cosmopolitan of him.

That’s what some refer to as a “born again” experience. Or it can be a gradual process of renewing one’s faith or coming to faith. Second is that they believe in the importance of the Bible.

Dr. Lindsay's language seems to indicate that being "born again" is one option for a personal relationship with Jesus? Seems Jesus did not (John 3).
