I responded to you when you posted this on the other blog. Are you willing to dialogue about this? I think every objection you raise is not only answerable, I think the answers are incredibly compelling and force one to take the Bible much more seriously.

There is a rich theological literature on the point you’ve raised. I need not refer to it, though, and it’s getting late at night where I live so I won’t take the time. For a brief answer I need only point out that Harold Camping made a confident prediction of an exact day and hour, which none of the persons you mention here did. He was spectacularly wrong—and then he made it even worse.

“I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.” Matthew 16:28.

Or: “After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.” I Thessalonians 4:17.

“Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour.” I John 2:18

“This is what I mean, brothers: the appointed time has grown very short. From now on, let those who have wives live as though they had none…” I Corinthians 7:29.

“They said to you, ‘In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires.’ These are the people who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit.” Jude 18-19.

People don’t have a seriousness about Judgment is right. Our Lord is quite serious nonetheless. Even on my local “Christian” radio station they made light of Campings prediction. They asked the question, What would you do if you knew it was going to be the last day?” The answers were amazingly dull.

“I want to go and see the wonders of the world before they are destroyed.” “I want to go to the top of the Empire State Building.” “And hey, you could jump off and try sky-diving!”

There’s a time to kid-around, but there seems to be no seriousness about hell, God’s wrath and judgment, and everlasting torment.
