I stumbled across an article yesterday with a related focus – whether Facebook was driving depression in teens who found themselves comparing their lives to those of Facebook ‘friends.’ (link: http://boston.cbslocal.com/2011/03/28/doctors-warn-about-facebook-depression-in-teens/). For my own part I am reluctant to blame technology for these dynamics; rather I am of the view that social media merely becomes a new conduit for existing socials ills. Focusing on the technology distracts people from addressing the real underlying problems.

Thanks Gayle for this post! I love your term “the inner ring” – very apt. I’d be curious if your and/or your readers have any suggestions to add to the list of how to use social media inclusively – it’d be terrific if this could become an “open source of etiquette” in the social space.
Also, you may be interested in this post about the “social media iceberg” phenomenon coined by David Berkowitz – I think that we are witnessing ever widening rings as live events are augmented by social commentary online: http://www.mediapost.com/publications/?fa=Articles.showArticle&art_aid=147655
