The President represents the state, in that sense a "person." Japan is a close ally and so a "friend."

This is one reason it is hard to be President. In my small way, I have had to represent Torrey in days of corporate mourning representing the chums in the Institute.

I pray for our President daily facing such a burden.

Reynolds wrote, "If called to be “mourner in chief” for the nation as President Obama is, then I would have avoided filling out my NCAA brackets while a key friend of the United States is suffering." But earlier the author talked about his rule of proximity, family and friendship and thus one could argue that the closest friends and family, the president's own nation is not cancelling March Madness but beginning it, more than fifty miles away from the disaster in progress in Japan. The argument turns against itself. Who knows what is the right thing to do and in what measure, but standing in criticism might be the worst thing to do. The cameras draw both the coast of Japan and its nuclear plants as well as a brackets chart too close to our eyes. Seems like the author is bracketing the love of the President for sports and the current craze in the States against an opponent who is now our friend. Harvey Mozolak
