Incidentally, the above photographs are of the oldest book in my library, a Robert Barker edition of the King James Bible, printed between 1637 and 1642. Barker had published the first edition in 1611. The binding is mostly intact, although the covers are not. The print is very small indeed, and successive owners put genealogical information and other notes in its pages. It's quite a remarkable volume, which I picked up for a song nearly 30 years ago.

Of all the bible translations I have in my personal library, the HCSB is not one of them. I have an acquaintance, the Rev. Chuck Huckaby, who thinks highly of it. Here is his take: Holman Christian Standard Bible 2009 Updated Text.
