Several years ago I started an blog series that provided brief profiles of influential evangelicals. The purpose was to help those who may see a name mentioned by the media—Albert Mohler, Richard Land, Jim Wallis—but not know  about them or why they are significant.

At the instigation of Justin Taylor, I’ve decided to bring that series to Evangel. I’m hoping that my fellow contributors will adopt the format and produce entries of their own.

If you have a recommendation for a profile, please leave it in the comments section.

      Dr. Beckwith,

      How about…

      “Know your Tiber Swimmers”?

(and why you don’t want to follow them).

I can’t believe anyone (myself included) has mentioned Mark Driscoll yet. What was I thinking?

Paul Zahl – his books are subtlely influential, and he was a part TGC (no more, alas)

While I understand the hesitation, I believe that a list of influential evangelicals is incomplete if it doesn’t also include those of whom we may be less proud. For example,

George Alan Rekers, Kent Hovind, Mike Warnke, Tim LaHaye, Mel Gibson, Carrie Prejean, Scott Lively, Christine O’Donnell, Tom Delay, George W. Bush, Jerry Falwell, Ted Haggard,….

Ah, that explains his behavior. :)

      Alvin Plantinga
      Mark Noll
      Timothy George
      Josh McDowell
Randy Forbes and Mike McIntyre (co-leaders of the Congressional Prayer Caucus; see related info here.)

There could be room for another series on non-evangelicals who have contributed significantly to evangelical thought and action. That would extend the list too far, perhaps, but I couldn’t help thinking of Rodney Stark and Robert George.

I assume we’re focusing on living men and women, people who might, as you say, pop up in the media or (more likely, for most of the names mentioned here) on blogs or forums.

Some folks that are more “behind the scenes” but definitely had an influence on the current generation of evangelicals:

      Richard Lovelace
      Gordon Fee
      David Wells

I’m betting (with regrets) that the most influential evangelical of the past several decades is Tim LaHaye.

      Or perhaps Joel Osteen?

Do Rousas J. Rushdoony, Gary North, Ray Sutton, George Grant, Gary DeMar, Greg Bahnsen, James Jordan and David Chilton count?
