“They lash out at the Pope because he’s famous, he’s said Christian things in public, and now has dared to come near enough to yell at. That’s mere Christian hate there.” Would love to hear you flesh this out more.

“The Pope protesters are protesting me and my church as well. He’s using his platform to deliver my message to that hostile crowd, and I’m grateful for that.”

I believe that this is the where and why of our current need for ecumenism in the ‘universal church’. Without it our effectiveness as Christians is divided.

You echo my thoughts as well. Good post.

I’d also add that Pope Ratzinger is, by and large, against Liberal Catholicism. So when he’s speaking out against liberal Catholics who are protesting conservative Catholicism, I appreciate it.
