"They lash out at the Pope because he’s famous, he’s said Christian things in public, and now has dared to come near enough to yell at. That’s mere Christian hate there." Would love to hear you flesh this out more.

"The Pope protesters are protesting me and my church as well. He’s using his platform to deliver my message to that hostile crowd, and I’m grateful for that."

I believe that this is the where and why of our current need for ecumenism in the 'universal church'. Without it our effectiveness as Christians is divided.

Thanks for the post!

TUAD: That's awfully charitable of you, considering that you believe that all Catholics, unless they repent, and turn toward your type of Christianity, are going to Hell.

Fred Sanders: "I have a lot of sympathy for Roman Catholic culture at the popular level, but the official stuff makes me feel belligerently low-churchy."

That statement made me laugh heartily.

Fred,

You echo my thoughts as well. Good post.

I'd also add that Pope Ratzinger is, by and large, against Liberal Catholicism. So when he's speaking out against liberal Catholics who are protesting conservative Catholicism, I appreciate it.

Good thoughts. For Protestants, the Pope and the RCC broadly function as "canaries in the coal mine." And I don't mean that disrespectfully.

The Pope serves Protestantism just as the Wall Street Journal served the Politburo. It's a way to discover the true worth of things without explicitly resorting to magisteria or markets.
