Scot McKnight interviewed Brian McLaren at Q Chicago, discussing issues such as McLaren’s “provocative ambiguity,” consistency (or lack thereof) in his writings, whether he is a universalist, and his paradigm shift in understanding the biblical narrative.

Robert: Thanks for bringing this video to our attention. I plan on watching the interview. I was unfamiliar with Q until this post. I wonder if there are videos for any of the following presentations at the same Chicago conference.
• The Both/And of the Gospel – Timothy Keller
• Did Jesus Preach the Gospel? – Scot McKnight
• Engaging Islam – Buddy Hoffman
• Saving Marriage Before It Starts – Mark Regnerus
• Overcoming the Faith and Science Divide – Alister McGrath

What a strange interview. He keeps condemning those who separate between us/them, and then he keeps on responding to questions with “I’m not sure I can even understand that view because it’s so foreign to the Bible,” and by “Bible” he means his perspective. In other words, you’re a “them” and I’m an “us” and I have the Bible on my side…

“He keeps condemning those who separate between us/them…”
That’s why I’ve always said there are only two types of people in the world: those who see everything as us v. them and those that don’t see everything as us v. them. And the latter group best represents us and not them.

How sad that this so-called Christian man’s answers sound nothing better than a typical politician on the campaign trail. Eventually Brian will find himself more and more alone in the Christian world and by “them”. By Christians and by the world for the same reason, that hardly anyone on the planet can truly respect and listen to a man that is completely spineless in giving a concrete answer to a very clear question.

McClaren amazes me – so many words and so little said.

When you walk away from the Bible, and try to talk theology…what have you got left?

I think Seth and Aaron nail McLaren pretty good with their comments. I think McLaren’s goal is to make Jesus into a modern Liberal and one that seeks to legitimize the sin for which Jesus died. Liberalism stands in anti-thesis to Christianity and McLaren is clearly advocating some sort of Liberal/Liberation Theology. His reading of Isaiah and Jesus setting the captives free is interpreted in purely Marxist ways, it is economic and political.
Jesus sure did seem to have an us/them mindset as does the whole Bible: light/dark, good/evil, sheep/goats, wheat/chaff, and the wicked/righteous. Maybe McLaren needs to fast with Muslims during Ramadan again in order to figure things out?
