I am familiar with Luce because I work in development, and I have researched the Henry Luce Foundation before. Did the book discuss the foundation in any kind of detail?

And great post about Luce! I had no idea he was a missionary's kid who grew up in China.

The only one I ever knew about was Ruth Bell Graham.

... I wonder what Henry Luce would think of Time magazine's move towards liberalism and its bent towards liberalism.

I think he might be a little unhappy.

Just like I think that Martin Luther might be a little unhappy with the Evangelical Lutheran Church Association (ELCA) that bears his name.

<i>"No, the assumption still holds in general. The Democrats were the New Dealers and tended to be more likely to be suspected of softness toward the Soviet Union. ... that doesn’t invalidate the basic understanding of the two parties."</i>

I agree with Hunter.

No, the assumption still holds in general. The Democrats were the New Dealers and tended to be more likely to be suspected of softness toward the Soviet Union. What you've accurately pointed out is that the south's racial politics muddied the waters, but that doesn't invalidate the basic understanding of the two parties.

Interesting, except for the assumption that early 20th century Republicans and Democrats were "conservatives" and "liberals," respectively. Before the shifts that accompanied the Civil Rights Movement, if anything, each party was often associated with the opposite tendency (e.g., Theodore Roosevelt as a liberal Republican, Democrats as Dixiecrats). But really, the current partisan breakdown in the US just doesn't work as a tool for understanding just about any other time or place.
