"Then how do you explain Guinness? That dark nectar alone is enough to keep me a papist."

It's the exception to prove the rule. Paul D's corollary to Koyzis' law works with beer, but wine proves the veracity of the original law. Except for South Africa, which received Calvinist immigrants from both Netherlands and France. South Africa has great wines, despite the relative lack of Roman and Orthodox cultural influence. Another exception to the rule, it seems.

Well, I have eaten oliebollen on occasion. The Greeks have a counterpart: loukoumades (λουκουμάδες), which could easily be mistaken for the Dutch sweet. In Canada we call them Timbits.® :-)

That what do we do with the French?

Or is the real reason they chased all the Huguenots out was not over theological reasons but simply an attempt to preserve the greatest food culture in the world? Which means the Pope wasn't trying to preserve power but instead was fighting for our right to eat coquille st jacque, canard a l'orange, escargot bourguignon, and above all, the best bread the world has ever seen?

Agreed. Sometime in the late '70s I drank two different Greek beers and they both had something of the unsettling flavour of soy sauce. Now it's strictly the Czechs, Dutch and Germans for me.
