Huh. Hmmm. true/real. You mean, like, what we heard, saw with our eyes, looked upon and touched with our hands and stuff?

Paul called the gospel “the word of truth,” but he connected the hearing of it with real, verifiable people, and spoke of obeying it in real, verifiable ways.

The reality of Jesus proves over and over again to be my undoing, because I’m so willing to proclaim the “truth” of it, but so dagnab unwilling to put feet to it.

Thanks for the post, and wherever you’re going with it. You’ve encouraged me twice today already.

On another note, and just for the record, when we owned the bookstore I was never more edified than when the shoppers there bought books in the Concordia series “Learning about Sex”. Corcordia published a lot of decent stuff, that that simply proved they actually were ministrering to real people on a topic most Christian parents need real help with.

So the jokes are jokes, but I really respect what Rev. McCain does during his day job. between all the blogging.

Thanks for being the only one to read this today. It didn’t have Oprah or politics or lutheranism in the title, so it is what it is.

Since it’s just us here, what if this isn’t just about “truth”, which is an abstract category, but about “real Jesus” instead.

To tip my hand a little, the rest of this series talks about how Jesus was real to Peter, so saying “This Jesus was crucified” meant something to him along the lines of “this friend of mine who lived here with us, and ate with us, and laughed and cried with us — he was crucified.”

My thinking is that we have to break through “true” into “real” here, and that if Jesus is real, well, … tell me what you think of that trajectory.

I guess that wasn’t “Calvinist” enough for anyone to comment.

The gospel commands a response, because it’s the truth. Any response that rejects the truth, by definition turns toward a lie.
