Here is the fascinating story of how scientists used St. Nicholas’ skull to do a reconstruction of his face, and the results look identical to an ancient icon of Nicholas of Myra. Read the story here. Here is what Nicholas looked like, first the reconstruction of his head and face based on the analysis of his skull, then below it, an ancient icon of Nicholas:

Why does he look so surprised?

He probably saw what Hallmark has done to him.

I’d like to see a reconstruction of Rudolph’s skull. Or at least an investigation into that nose.

Besides the hair and part of the beard…how do they look a like again?

      They couldn’t look more different…

There is a striking resemblance between the ancient icon depiction of Nicholas and the skull reconstruction. And he makes a pretty good Santa too.

The tile icon is fascinating. Where is it from?
“ho Hagios Nikolaos” = the Holy Nicholas, but I can’t place the style of the lettering and artwork, which seem late medieval or even early renaissance — but I could be way off, as early Byzantine art was very sophisticated, and I haven’t seen many tiles from any era. Pardon my ignorance.

It’s tenth century Byzantine…though I’ve had a few art history courses in my day, I’d not have had any idea were it not for Google:
