What possible value is there in a naturalistic yet fatalistic end of the world? Just enjoying the devastation seems a little nihilistic to me. Even those with no belief in God at all recognized that getting on the boats was the only safety measure worth fighting over. Maybe Nirvana is overrated when faced with the reality of death.
